Frieling French Press Ultimo 24oz ~ Insulated Stainless Steel Coffee Press ~ 6 Cup Review

Frieling French Press Ultimo 24oz ~ Insulated Stainless Steel Coffee Press ~ 6 Cup
Average Reviews:

I have owned several glass French Press makers and enjoyed them very much but kept losing them to breakage. This one is not only unbreakable but quite stylish. The insulation is a plus though the coffee does not stay hot as long as it would in a standard thermos.

By doing away with filters and cones, this 24-ounce French press from Frieling makes rich, delicious coffee in a self-contained, non-electric design. The press also smartly sidesteps the problem of breakable glass carafes with its high-quality 18/10 stainless-steel construction. At once beautiful, sleek, and sturdy, the mirror-finish piece has a satisfying weight, a comfortable full-length handle, and an all-steel mesh plunger mechanism ideal for coarse coffee grounds or loose tea leaves. Frieling's double-wall construction keeps hot beverages hot and cold ones cold if you use the pitcher by itself for milk or juice. Standing 8-5/8 inches high, the press disassembles completely for washing by hand or running through the dishwasher

I was on my way to purchase a set of All Clad and saw these. The design is gorgeous, the weight is excellent, and Calphalon is an excellent name. I bought the 10 piece set.
I had it for only 10 days and found something very distressing. When you stir the food, what do you do with the spoon? You hit it on the edge of the pan to get off any food. I do this routinely without any problems. To my surprise, the Calphalon's edge dented with every hit. I can only imagine what the edges would look like after a year, given that I'd only had them 10 days and the edges were all beat up. Please, don't get the impression that I'm hard on pots, but the softness of the steel was very disconcerting and was bad enough after 10 days for me to return the set. A $500 set of pots shouldn't dent like these did.

The sleek curves of the unique design complement your kitchen, as does the brushed stainless exterior. The tri-ply construction with full aluminum core means superb conductivity and even heating. The stay-cool handles remain comfortable for hours on the stovetop, and the tempered-glass covers provide see-through convenience and make for a beautiful presentation. Norpro KRONA Stainless Steel Steamer Juicer Review

Last year (2008) our little planting of grapes finally started producing. We borrowed a steam juicer and were able to can about 42 quarts of grape juice (along with eating a bunch and selling some). The juicer was so nice that we decided to purchase our own. This Norpro Juicer Steamer has many of the features we were looking for. Stainless steel. Good capacity. We also liked this unit because of the glass lid which allows you to know how the process is going without opening it up (one thing we didn't like with the steamer we borrowed last year). I also noticed that the handles are designed to remain cooler than the other unit - another good feature of this steamer.

Jack LaLanne Power Juicer Pro Review

Jack LaLanne Power Juicer Pro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, I actually bought this juicer before I read the reviews for this one (Power Juicer Pro) and the other J.LaLanne juicers (Power Juicer, Power Juicer Deluxe). I had wanted one for at least 15 years and put if off due to the cost. So now I have one, and I love it! Like I wrote, I read the reviews after I paid for it already. But alot of the negative reviews were so terribly written and most of the people couldn't even spell - I mean like the word "vegetable"! So I dismissed most of them as uninformed or lacking. And sure enough! If you read the owner's booklet, and use the product properly, you will not have any problems with it. Here are my responses to some of the problems listed by other reviews (this includes all J.LaLanne Power Juicer models):
"Strainer is plastic on the 'Pro'" - No, it isn't. Maybe it used to be when this review was written (?).
"I made 2 quarts of juice, then my juicer started leaking out the sides" - uhm, again if you read the booklet, you should only be making a couple of glasses at a time - one quart max. - then you will need to clean the strainer as the pulp will clog up the strainer and cause juice to back up into the machine. This juicer is not designed to hold liquid.
"The motor shaft sheared off when I tightened the blade onto it". The booklet states to be careful when tightening on the blade as this can cause the shaft to shear. This may be a legitimate problem with the product and this shaft ShouLD be metal, not plastic. So far, I have had no problems, and am very careful not to tighten too hard.
"I put in radishes and they blew out the pulp chute". The booklet states to follow small items immediately with larger ones to keep this from happening. I have not had a problem with small items such as radishes.
"The spout leaks all over the place". Again, I have had no problems with the spout.
"It is hard to clean and the little brush they give you does nothing". This product is EXTREMELY easy to clean. The brush works very well on the strainer. A power water sprayer also works wonders. Additional advice is to clean right after juicing, or right after you enjoy your juice. Naturally, if you let the juicer sit uncleaned, the pulp and juice residue will get dry and hard and be difficult to get off. If you clean it right away, it is a breeze and shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to clean the five pieces.
This juicer also comes with two juice recipe books and one juice and pulp recipe book (muffins, soups, and such).

I have made several different kinds of juice with whatever kind of fruit was ripe in the garden. I love it so much I even got fruit out of the freezer that I wanted to process but never had the time to last year. I can't wait for the grapes to be ready.
Very easy to use and the juice comes out clear and without any effort. Just fill the bottom pot with water, add the fruit to the basket, turn it on and wait an hour. Cleanup is easy as the pulp cleans up easily and each piece of the system is manageable in size and with nicly rounded corners.
I have used elderberry in the steam juicer and the tube did not stain, even though elderberry seems to stain anything it comes in contact with.
I dilute the juice concentrate with water for our breakfast juice and I know it will pay for itself in a short time.
This is a wonderful way to make healthy juice without the effort and trouble of conventional juice exctraction.

This is the third one I've ordered -- the first two were lost or stolen, and I absolutely had to get a replacement. If you want a thermos that keeps your drink hot for hours and hours and hours, and has a little cup to pour your drink into, then this is for you. If you want something that you can drink from in the car, it's not. The only thing I would change is to make the neck a little wider so that I could put ice cubes in it for chilled drinks. But this is a small problem, so I give it 4.9/5 stars.

I used this steam extractor for the first time yesterday. It worked great. Pot is just the right size and cleans up easily. It works on most fruits and sure beats all that mashing and straining. To use you just wash your fruit, load it in the top pan, put water in the bottom pan and drain off the juice, as it appears, out the tube, from the center pan.
I have used an older aluminum steamer for several years, but I'm happy with my upgrade to stainless.
The one thing I don't like about it--The steamer is made in China. We can make this in the U.S.A.!

Use the Victorio stainless steel steam juicer to extract the natural juice of grapes, berries, and other high-liquid fruits with the power of steam. Just boil water in the bottom container and place fruit in the top container. Natural concentrated fruit juice drips in the center pan where it can be extracted through a surgical-quality, heat-resistant tube. Use the juice for making jellies or to store as concentrate for healthy natural fruit juice. Also works great for steaming vegetables. This steam juicer is induction range compatible.

I purchased the Jack Lalanne Juicer from a major retailer and was thoroughly disappointed with its "inability" to juice much more than an apple so forget about wheatgrass (it went back that same day)! While the Hurricane does take some elbow grease (manual labor), it's SO worth it! This thing can get juice out of darn near anything!
In comparison, the Lalanne Juicer took about 20 minutes to properly clean-up, while the Hurricane is less than a 3 minute clean-up! Its Stainless Steel construction is awesome and I know it will last a lifetime!
As usual...delivery was FAST!

Breville 800BLXL Die-Cast Hemisphere 2-Speed Blender with 67-Ounce Polycarbonate Jar Review

Breville 800BLXL Die-Cast Hemisphere 2-Speed Blender with 67-Ounce Polycarbonate Jar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading the previous reviews, I was a bit leery of buying this blender. I wanted the best, period. First, this is in my opinion the best looking and I leave it on my counter top, replacing a Kitchen Aid which I gave to my sister.
The first thing I did was to fill the jug with ice to the top. I pushed the ice button and within a few minutes, I had finely grated snow with no large chunks at all. It would have been a perfect snow cone. I went on to put in Strawberries, soft tofu, Yogurt, Soy vanilla ice cream, honey and a little non fat milk on top of the shaved ice. It made one of the best smoothies I have ever had. I have had numerous complements from my wife and neighbors on the smoothies this produces.
I also put in a whole large sweet onion quartered and three cups of large skinned tomatoes, some mushrooms, corn and whole garlic cloves, along with some essential seasoning and made a perfect tomato soup. The consistency was creamy and consistently smooth throughout. No chunks of any of the ingredients, including the corn kernels or garlic cloves. It was wonderful.
I have not had this very long. About two weeks now, but it has gotten a lot of use in that time. I can not speak to the long term reliability of the product, but I have had other Breville products and they are consistently top drawer. The one thing I do think that Breville might have misjudged is that the jar is polycarbonate, a fancy word for plastic. It does seem to be a very sturdy jar and perhaps, there is a certain logic to it. When I transport a full jug of soup from the blender to a bowl or what ever, the weight is quite manageable. Not really an issue for me, but I could see it for others, especially elderly or those with physical limitations. The fit of the blade to the base and jar is clean and the design seems to be very well thought out. There is a plastic wrench supplied in the event the blade base is stuck on the jar, but I have not needed it yet for cleaning and there have been no leaks even after storing liquids in the jar for a period with just hand tightening.
It is only a two speed but in doing some research it seems that most multi button blenders have a low speed and 12 high speeds which are the same. This is done for the button loving public who think more is better. The 1000 watts is not really a dependable measure of the power of the motor since it really only tells you the power consumption of the motor and not the output. It seems to have more than enough power for the toughest jobs however and is heavy enough not to move if I do walk away from it to get an ingredient to place in the top opening while it is running.
Breville seems to have come up with a nice design of the blades and bottom of the container since it moves the material from the top to the bottom and vice versa for even cutting quite well on it's own and the hole in the top makes it easy to insert new ingredients with the motor running. I will say that this blender does everything I ask of it and better than my high end Kitchen Aid Blender which left small chunks of things like ice and garlic or corn kernels, etc.
If I have a problem with the motor breaking down as the others had, ( which based on my other Breville appliances, I doubt will be a problem), I will come back and comment on it, but for now, this is the nicest blender I have ever owned and I highly recommend it. In my opinion well worth the extra money.

Jack Lalanne's JLSS Power Juicer Deluxe Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer Review

Jack Lalanne's JLSS Power Juicer Deluxe Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, let me admit to the fact that I've never owned any kind of juicer before, this one is the first.
We were given the Jack LaLanne Stainless Juicer as a gift from someone who already had one and loved it. I had modestly high hopes for it, not being a big powered-kitchen-gadget fan; but we also have been trying to improve our diets due and lose some weight, so the gift was rather timely to meet that end. I honestly knew nothing about this product until I pulled it out of the box at home. We'd gone to the local big-box store and bought a bunch of stuff to put in the machine and try it out: Kiwis, mangoes, carrots, tomatoes, apples, oranges, pears, ginger root, celery and pineapple.
The Good:
Out of the box I got the impression that this was a sturdy product. All of the parts are fairly simple, that means less stuff to break or clean to me. It assembled in a snap, I didn't even look at the directions (typical guy...I know). Upon firing up the machine, I was impressed with how quiet it was. A modest hum and vibration was all that I could hear. Fruit being put in the device emits a sound reminiscent of a very quiet band or table saw. By the time I've written this, all of the above products have passed through the juicer and released some juice without trouble, the "hard" bits were cut off or out (stems, mango pits, etc...) and the juicer had no difficulty turning any of them into pulp. Incidentally, one of my favorite things to put in the juicer so far is simply a couple of carrots and apples. Tastes good, but probably gives me an orange tongue... There is also a stopper on the drain spout that allows you to stop the flow of juice while you trade out whatever it is you are using to catch the juice.
Cleanup was no problem. Dumped the pulp bucket, cleaned the gunk out of the lid (some pulp sticks to the upper lid) with my hand and rinsed it off with soapy water. The blade was easy to clean, but the screen takes a little more effort, it is fairly delicate. I was able to clean it no problem with a lightweight scrubbing pad. The lower portion and base clean up easily as well.
What produce seems to do well:
Apples do very well. Lots of juice and the pulp is pretty dry.
Carrots: Same as apples.
Celery: Pretty good job here too. Careful though, celery has a pretty strong taste; it'll overpower a lot of other flavors.
Oranges: Pretty good. I've noticed that it doesn't seem to get as much juice out of these as it could, the pulp can be pretty wet sometimes.
Kiwis: Not so good. The kiwis are very pulpy and tend to block the undersized drain hole from the catch basin. They taste good though...
Pineapple: Lots of juice, not as much as you might think though. Due to the very fibrous nature of pineapple I found I had to stop the juicer after half a pineapple and clean the screen. The fibers were getting caught in it, unbalancing and blocking it. It tends to gum up the cutting blade as well.
Mango: Same as kiwis. Tastes good, but the pulp gums up the works.
Tomatoes: Great! Lots of juice, and with the re-addition of some of the pulp makes a great tomato soup. Again, due to the soft pulpy nature of tomatoes, it tends to plug things up.
Pears: If you pick the firmer varieties, they go through just like apples.
Ginger root: We'd had a glass of ginger/orange juice somewhere and wanted to re-create it, it was pretty good. Ginger doesn't have a high water content so you need to run it through first and then the wetter produce behind it to pull the ginger flavor out with it. Pretty strong flavor, don't need as much as you think. The Bad and Ugly:
There are several design issues that this juicer has that are serious drawbacks to me. The drain hole is one of the big ones, as well as the fit and finish of some of the parts.
The drain hole simply isn't large enough. It plugs up way too easily no matter what produce is run through the machine in any sufficient amount to create more than two or three tall glasses of juice. This results in juice leaking down the motorized base and making a pretty substantial mess, usually because you are halfway through running something through the machine and the juice has been backing up for a bit. I think it said somewhere in the directions that some of this is "normal", I gotta raise the BS flag...I call it bad design. The directions say not to run really ripe fruit through the machine (which could lead to leakage problems); well, what are you supposed to use, hard and sour unripe fruit? Even chasing something "pulpy" like kiwi through the machine with something hard like apple doesn't seem to clear the machine out at all. The inability to use ripe fruit seems to contradict the reason you'd want the juice to begin with. This is by far one of the more frustrating issues with this juicer, it should not get plugged up so easily.
A design issue is the catch basin and lid; the catch basin does not line up with the lid very well and can shift if you are juicing a lot of things consecutively, you'll wind up with pulp on your counter if you don't keep an eye on it. There is no solid mechanical connection between the two. The lid also has a couple of crannies in it that pulp seems to migrate towards that are difficult to clean by hand, those should be eliminated in a design update.
Another design issue: The Chrome Plated Plastic. Not all of the parts of the device that shines is "stainless [steel]". I checked the directions front to back as well as the warranty information, the juicer is "dishwasher safe" (except the base), so one could reasonably expect to throw the parts in the dishwasher and have no ill effects. WRONG. Do NOT use a high heat drying/washing cycle. This will cause the chrome plating to come off, and may also deform the thermoplastic (which is all of the plastic) parts as is what happened to a previous reviewer. Ours had the chrome plating begin to "rot" off after only the second wash. I called the Jack LaLanne juicer service phone number and they suggested I return it. I'd take it back, but I don't care about the chrome myself and the product works fine. If you've had this problem, take it back and get a replacement, they need to correct the washing instructions or fix the product design.
Another bad property of the product is that it mentions various vegetables or grasses that naturally have a low water content can be put in the juicer. Wheat grass and broccoli come to mind. I think that this is misleading; from my experience with the ginger root, these products do not have enough liquid content to produce a significant amount of juice and will need to be "chased" in the machine with something that has a higher liquid content to extract any material. This is bad information given to the consumer if they think they can get a glass of "straight" wheat grass juice. In summary: 3 to 3 1/2 stars. What the machine is capable of doing, it does well. It does not do everything it should do (as advertised) and has some unfortunate limitations and design issues. When it works, it does a really good job, but I wouldn't want to be limited to apples, carrots, tomatoes, hard pears and celery if I had actually paid for this product. I would give this a very cautious "buy it" recommendation, but just know what you are getting into and see if there's something that might do a better job for you. If they update the design, then this juicer may be a better product.

A welcome addition to any healthy kitchen, this fruit-and-vegetable electric juicer produces fresh juice quickly and easily. Cook N Home 9-1/2-Quart Stainless-Steel Juicer Steamer
Average Reviews:

This is the greatest juicer I have ever used! I juice elderberries every year to make concentrate for the flu and cold season. These little berries are very hard to juice, and with the hanging time involved (usually over night) it took at least twelve hours just to get the juice. With this steamer juicer I had pure juice in one half hour and had made the concentrate and water bath canned it in a total of one hour. I have also used the steamer juicer for stawberries, blackberries, apples, and tomatoes with wonderful results. Winemakers and home canners would be doing themselves a big favor by purchasing one of these, as the time saved and the quality of the juice will pay for the juicer in no time.

With a 9-1/2-quart capacity, this juicer steamer offers plenty of room for high-volume juicing, measuring approximately 12 inches in diameter by 14-1/2 inches tall. Simply add fresh fruit in the top container, fill the bottom container with water, and bring to a boil on the stove top. The resulting steam gently extracts the juice, which drips into the center pan where it can be collected from the surgical-quality tube. Drink the vitamin-rich juice fresh, or save it for making jelly or syrup. Without the center pan and tube, the juicer steamer can also be used to steam vegetables on the stove top.
Ruggedly built, the juicer steamer features gleaming stainless-steel construction with a bottom that consists of a layer of aluminum sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel for fast, even heat distribution. Side loop handles on each of the three vessels help ensure safe, secure transport, and its secure-fitting lid with a loop handle helps keep in heat, moisture, and nutrients. Instructions and a recipe book come included.

Breville 800CPXL Die-Cast Stainless-Steel Motorized Citrus Press Review

Breville 800CPXL Die-Cast Stainless-Steel Motorized Citrus Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We just received our Breville 800CPXL Citrus Press after the holidays and have used it several times since. Compared to the low-end (and much less expensive) plastic Krupps version we replaced (which kept tripping our GFCI), I rate this product 4.5 stars out of 5. It falls just short of perfection, but is nonetheless the most elegant and functional citrus juicer I've been able to find at this price point.
LIKES:
1) Beautiful die-cast design feels substantial and stays put when pressing citrus. Kudos to the industrial design team for turning a juicer into a work of art. This is by far the best looking electric citrus press on the market.
2) Brushed stainless exterior goes with any decor and looks great on countertop. No reason to store it away.
3) Removable strainer and juice basin are easy to handwash (I recommend using a small brush or toothbrush to help clean out the pulp).
4) Can press an 8-oz glass of orange juice in less than a minute and works with lemons, mandarins, oranges, and grapefruits without changing elements.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
This juicer works well and beats others I've tried. However, there are a few areas that Breville engineers could improve in their next model. None of these recommendations should cause you to avoid purchasing this unit, but I list them here nonetheless since there's always room to improve most products:

1) Doesn't handle large grapefruit as well as I'd like. Still left some juice/pulp in the skin, which I squeezed out by hand. Breville could consider offering a larger snap-on attachment more suitably sized for pressing grapefruit.
2) Sometimes the skin of the orange remains stuck inside the top of the press, requiring manual extraction. Maybe I'm pressing too hard, but this still seems to happen from time to time. On a few occasions, I stalled the motor completely which surprised me. However, stalling the motor didn't cause the GFCI to keep tripping like the Krupps model we replaced.
3) The electrical cord is nicely designed, but a little too short. I'd prefer to see a 6' cord to reach to the nearest outlet while allowing flexibility in where to place the juicer on the countertop.
4) If you leave the juicer out on the countertop where there's a cabinet above, the handle (press) bangs against the top of the cabinet and requires a little finesse to pull it towards the edge of the countertop when you're ready to use it. The typical height between the countertop and bottom of a cabinet is 18" +/- 1" and often the face frame of the cabinet protrudes about 1/2" or so below the bottom of the cabinet underside. If Breville offered a locking position with the handle down, this wouldn't be a problem and it would be easier to slide out the juicer into position from the back of the counter.
5) The handle itself seems a little flimsy when compared to the rest of the die-cast machine. While it's functional and certainly strong enough, I would prefer a solid convex die-cast handle arm (oval cross section) versus the inverted "U" type cross section of the current design. Although the current arm does appear to be die cast, during the extraction process, juice and pulp tend to splatter on the concave underside of the handle. This makes cleaning the handle a little harder than it should if the handle cross section were convex on top and bottom.
Overall, this is an excellent product with bold design and good looks. I recommend this model to anyone who wants to add freshly squeezed citrus to your daily or weekly regimen. I can't comment on the long-term reliability of the motor since we've only had the unit for a few weeks. But so far so good.

Waring PJE401 Juice Extractor, Quite White and Stainless Steel Review

I bought this machine for its power and brand-name quality. It is powerfull indeed and is sturdy in construction. With its centrifugal approach to extracting juices, the machine really gets the juice out until the last drop. I really liked it until I tried putting watermelon in it: the machine grinded the juice shreder plate inside. No more quality and effortless juicing after that. Had the machine replaced thinking it was just the particular unit I had purchased, but it happened again. So, I was left with having to purchase a replacement plate from the manufacturer. This third time I tried grapes, and whamo!...for the third time the machine ruined its plate. At $40.00 a piece it is no joke having to replace the plate a couple of times, plus it is not a good feeling when you don't know how the machine will react when certain fruits are juiced. After these three incidents, I only use it to extract juices from carrots, apples, and celery...no more grapes or watermelon...in all the machine will do a good job so long it does not encounter a seed in the fruit, else say bye-bye to the plate.
