Juice Plus Orchard and Garden Blend Review

Juice Plus Orchard and Garden Blend

There is a lot of controversy surrounding this dietary supplement. The manufacturer claims that their product is the next best thing to eating fruits and vegetables, and that it picks its fruit and veggies at their peak ripeness, and then they use a proprietary process to reduce them to a powder containing much of the original vitamins and nutrients, while maintaining high bio-availability (which means that your body is able to use and take advantage of the nutrients instead of excreting most of it as waste).
Many scientific studies, however, claim to disprove many of the manufacturer's claims about the product. It doesn't help that the main product distribution process is through the use of multi-level marketing (aka pyramid scheme).
Before I knew any of this, our Lamaze coach recommended it as a convenient way for my pregnant wife to make sure that the fetus (and my wife) would get as many vital nutrients as possible. Of course, nothing compares to eating fresh fruits and vegetables, but it's not always possible to eat as many as JuicePlus claims to contain.
I have personally used JuicePlus off and on over the past year or so, and I've found that, when I take it regularly for a couple weeks, most of the tension in my neck and shoulders disappears, which is amazing. So, what's the main catch? At $160 for a 4-month supply (per person), it's not exactly a purchase you shrug off. Until I'm able to find something that is as natural, convenient, and doesn't have all kinds of crazy side-effects, though, I'm sticking with JuicePlus.

Wheat Grass Juicer Review

Wheat Grass Juicer
Average Reviews:

When I first bought the juicer, I cleaned it with soap and water per the instructions. I put an apple in to see what would happen, and it made 1-1/2 pure apple silver juice. It must have been the rust. Then next time I washed it again, coated it with oil, I put a carrot and an apple and I got liquid silver pulp coming out. I washed it YET again then tried to put wheatgrass through it, and again silver-wheatgrass juice. If you are going to buy a wheatgrass juicer, buy an electric one, or one that is made of plastic and metal that doesn't ooze silver liquid. It was a complete waste of fifty bucks; do yourself a favor and avoid this at all costs.

Weston Cast Iron Wheat Grass Juicer Review

Weston Cast Iron Wheat Grass Juicer

It's a good juicer. It's heavy, but it's cast iron so it's expected. I use it in my dorm for wheatgrass that I grow and it's great. Just make sure you wash it immediately, you wouldn't want it to get rusty, right?
All the parts work well. It even has an attachable rubber "foot" so you don't scratch things or maybe it's for better grip. I'm a 19 year old girl and I can crank it just fine.
It's not beautiful but it gets the job done. :)
I'm going to try apples and celery and other fruits and veggies sometime.

Blendtec The Professional's Choice 1560-Watt Total Blender Review

Blendtec The Professional's Choice 1560-Watt Total Blender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a powerful blender, and is comparable to the VitaMix. I love the square design of the container, because it is easy to clean - way easier to clean than the VitaMix, and the blade at the bottom is not sharp, so I don't nick myself when cleaning the bottom of the blender. It is also much easier to scrape the blended goodness out of the bottom of the blender. But I don't like the lid design. The lid is flat and sits flush against the top of the blender. It gets splattered from the force of the blended ingredients. Makes a mess when you open it. This is a real problem when blending in between adding ingredients. Also, the plunger sometimes IS needed - even with a BlendTec, although Blendtec says it is not needed because of the variable speeds on its blender settings. There are times when I wish I had the plunger to just push things down while the blender is on. Instead, I have to take the lid off, which is dripping all over with blended goo, thus making a mess, so I can stir the ingredients because there is no plunger to push the food down into the blades like the VitaMix.
I have owned a Vitamix for 15 years, and it has proven to be a workhorse. The Blendtec seems to be just as strong, and I welcome it to my kitchen. It seems to do an even better job of grinding grains than the Vitamix. No "dry" container is needed. You just use the same container for both wet and dry ingredients. You don't really need a grain mill if you have the Blendtec, as it really does a very good job of blending grains and dry beans very quickly. It also makes nut butters almost instantly.
Overall, the Blendtec is extremely powerful, and meets my needs for what I use it for - I do daily green smoothies. I just wish it had a different lid, and a plunger.

Replace up to nine other kitchen appliances with this easy-to-use countertop machine--no need for a separate grain mill, juicer, bread machine, ice-cream maker, smoothie maker, blender, milkshake maker, coffee grinder, or ice crusher. With its powerful, commercial-quality, 1560-watt motor, the multi-purpose blender can handle almost any kitchen task. The all-in-one appliance works great for making fruit smoothies, freshly squeezed juice, homemade ice cream, milkshakes, cappuccinos, margaritas, soups, sauces, bread dough, dressings, salsas, and more. It can even turn ice into snow and comes with an ice-crushing guarantee. Furthermore, the countertop blender's exclusive trademarked Smart-Touch Tec-nology takes the guesswork out of blending and food processing. Simply press a button from the digital touchpad and the unit's preprogrammed cycle automatically speeds up and slows down to draw ingredients into the two-prong stainless-steel blade, which spins up to 29,000 rpm, thoroughly blending ingredients so recipes turn out perfect every time. The appliance provides a digital display to show the current status, and it shuts off automatically once the cycle has completed. Cycle options include "ice cream, frozen yogurt", "ice crush, milkshake", "soups, syrups, fondues", "sauces, dips, dressings, batters", "whole juice", and "smoothie". I have little luck with this seed and am very disappointed. I have tried several batches and get 10-15% yield from them. I do not know if the is old seed or what the problem is. Wheatgrass will usually grow no matter what so I gotta believe the seed is not optimal. Very expensive waste of time and money for me = (

All Wheat is Not EqualWe have had the experience of growing wheatgrass and being in the commercial wheatgrass business over the last 14 years. During that time we have experienced many different kinds of wheat. We have used wheat from Texas, Utah, Montana, California, and Israel both organic and non organic. There are two kinds of wheat one can buy: chemical free and certified organic. Most wheat is chemical free in that the farmer might or might not use an herbicide to control the weeds in his fields. If he uses chemicals on the wheat, it will cause a distinct taste in the bread thus no chemicals are used on the wheat itself. Then there is certified organic: Certified organic is the same as chemical free except the wheat is grown by farmers who have not used chemicals on their land for over ten years. The difference is the certification. If a wheat is organic and you grow it in organic soil, it will have the necessary organisms in the soil to help it assimilate the minerals properly. Organic produce should also have the organism on it which produces cobalamin (B-12)In our search to give you the very best wheat we have done two things. We now handle an chemical free red spring wheat, from Northern Idaho. For those who want certified organic, we have a red spring QAI Certified Organic. QAI is Quality Assurance International, who give independent, third party certification of organic food systems and have been the foundation of domestic and international organic food trade.

Healthy Juicer - Manual Hand Powered Wheatgrass Juicer - Wheat grass juicer Review

Healthy Juicer - Manual Hand Powered Wheatgrass Juicer - Wheat grass juicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
-----
1. Very compact: It takes less counter/table space than a small plate. Most of the electrics (except the L'Equip mini and the Waring JEX 328) are major space hogs.
2. Very efficient: Masticating juicers extract more juice than the centrifugal models. Perhaps more importantly, they do a better job of crushing tough plant cell walls and releasing enzymes - think minced garlic versus chopped garlic. (Whether or how much added health benefits this results in, depends on what you juice. It's hard to get good info on this, but plant enzymes typically help in breakdown and better absorption of nutrients.)
3. Cheap (Check out their Ebay listing - it's $10 cheaper over there.) If you don't want to drop upwards of $250 on an electric masticating juicer, or aren't sure whether you'll stick to it, this one's worth a try.
4. Easy to clean
Cons:
-----
1. The hopper's a bit small, which means you'll be reloading frequently. This seems to be the trouble with masticating juicers in general (including the electrics), but the Z-star manual juicer (also available on amazon, though at twice the cost) has a somewhat bigger hopper.
UPDATE: see effort section below.
2. As I haven't used this long enough, I can't say how durable it is, though it seems very tough and well-made. (The auger tip and the surface it crushes against are both stainless steel, and all the rest is polycarbonate.)
Juicing effort:
---------------
Turning the handle: Effortless for leafy veggies, very little effort for carrots and firm veggies, provided you cut them into smaller pieces first. Don't expect to be able to throw a whole carrot or radish in. The reviewer that claims that you need to be a weightlifter to turn this thing was funny, but wildly off the mark.
UPDATE: Curiously enough, on trying red cabbage, the juicer groans, esp. with largish pieces. I noticed that the juicing effort is quite sensitive to the size of the pieces - with smallish pieces, not only is less turning effort required, but the produce doesn't need pushing either. This lets you feed and crank the handle at the same time, making the process faster.
All in all, though, this idiosyncracy counts as a negative point, and I'm lowering my rating to 4 stars.
UPDATE 2: When juicing cabbage, drizzle a little bit of olive oil over the chopped cabbage - this completely eliminates the groaning (which happens due to friction between the rubbery leaves and the juicer body).
Cleaning: better than the electrics in this department because of fewer parts and simpler design. Cleanup is a major part of juicing effort, so I count this as a pro.
Cutting: For firm veggies, you'll have to cut them into smaller parts (no perfect julienne required; just a quick, sloppy chop would do.) Even so, this adds a little bit to the effort, so if you primarily want to juice firm veggies, you should look at an electric.
Setup: Very easy (again, from the simpler design).

Healthy Juicer, the affordable manual wheatgrass juicer Features & Specifications The Healthy Juicer is the easiest, most efficient and most affordable manual wheatgrass juicer available Most people know about the extensive health benefits of juicing, but nobody enjoys the process of setting up the juicer and worst of all, cleaning up afterwards. The Healthy Juicer is rugged, efficient, and best of all, easy to use and clean! Designed to handle leafy greens There are two types of juicers on the market today. Centrifugal and masticating (meaning to crush and squeeze). The main benefit of a masticating juicer is that it crushes the fruits and vegetables as opposed to shredding them as your average centrifugal juicer does. This process of crushing and squeezing extracts more juice and also has less heat build up than from the high speed at which centrifugal juicers work, which destroys the enzymes and other vital nutrients. The Healthy Juicer produces a healthier juice! Have you ever tried to juice leafy vegetables such as parsley, spinach or even cabbage in a centrifugal juicer? A good portion of it is wasted and just passes through as these juicers do not have any crushing ability. Vegetables are expensive today, especially organic ones. Why throw your money away by not extracting as much juice and nutrients as possible from them? The specially designed

Factory-Reconditioned Breville XXJE95XL Two Speed Juice Fountain Plus Review

Factory-Reconditioned Breville XXJE95XL Two Speed Juice Fountain Plus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This reconditioned juicer works well and provides a speedy glass of juice in seconds. It's got a satin nickel finish which also looks good on my countertop. It has few parts and all are easily detached and can be cleaned in the dishwasher top rack. You can also line the pulp catcher with a plastic grocery bag to catch all the pulp and then throw it away. The feed chute is fairly large and you can put a whole decent sized tomato or a small apple down it pretty easily. So it saves you chopping time. This juicer has 2 speeds - slow for softer fruits and veggies and high for harder veggies. The italian wire mesh spins at a very high rate and vegetable turn to juice and fine pulp in seconds. You are not supposed to run this juicer more than 3-4 minutes at a stretch but that's ok as it is so fast that in 3 minutes you could probably get through several pounds of veggies. As a juicer it is fantastic, you can even put peeled oranges and tangerines down it and get frothy orange juice in seconds. I even made my own combinations. Ever tried cabbage, carrots and oranges together? It was pretty neat and tasted good!
However despite all the fun I had making several juice mocktails, I am taking away one star from this juicer as I am not very happy about the quantities of vegetables or fruits it takes to create one glass of juice. For instance, about 3-4 pounds of carrots will probably only produce a medium sized glass of juice. I remember metal hand cranked commercial juicers at juice stores from my childhood that produced more juice and less pulp. It also has a hard time with softer fruits even at the low speed. I put in 4 big bunches of champagne grapes into the juicer only to get a 6 oz. glass of juice. When I put the pulp back again into the juicer I got another 2-3 teaspoons of juice and there were still several grapes in the pulp that were not fully juiced. Therefore juicing with this machine can be expensive. I hate to throw away all the good pulp too...as it's pretty wasteful. But I simply cannot make a carrot cake each time I juice carrots or a fruit pie each time I juice some fruits. So the machine is getting less use than it should.
Despite this being a nice juicer I may send it back and go back to eating fresh whole fruit and veggies. That way I'll get the fiber and less calories. But for folks who prefer to drink juice to eating the raw veggies and fruit this is a powerful and well designed juicer and very easy to clean.
Update - The price of this juicer has been fluctuating a lot on Amazon in December 2007 it was listed for under 40 bucks for a few days and now in Jan 2008 it is closer to 90 bucks. Just something you might want to be aware of!

With the ability to juice an 8-ounce glass of juice in five seconds, this 850-watt professional juice extractor features a powerful computer-controlled 14,000 rpm motor, which easily maintains the selected speed when juicing under heavy loads. Its Italian stainless-steel, micro-mesh filter separates the juice from the fiber and seeds of the fruit and vegetables so that maximum juice is extracted. To cut out all preparation time required for juicing, the unit's unique, extra-wide, centrifugal feed chute allows for whole fruits and vegetables to be added without the need for chopping them into pieces first. The juicer's two-speed electronic control offers low speed for juicing soft fruits and vegetables and high speed for more textured fruits and vegetables. For quick, easy clean up, all the juicer's parts are dishwasher safe except for the motor, and for added convenience, a disposable plastic bag can be used to line the large pulp container and then thrown away when finished. A 1-liter juice jug with a froth separator and a large-capacity, 2-1/2-liter, easy-to-clean, removable pulp container are included. This is a factory-reconditioned juicer which includes a 90-day manufacturer's warranty. Always make sure the Juice Fountain is properly and completely assembled before operating. As a safety mechanism, the unit will not turn "On” unless properly assembled. Always turn the Juice Fountain "On” to the low or high setting before adding any vegetables or fruits with the food pusher. The motor of the machine must be completely running to ensure proper and full use.
