That being said, I had basically quit using my patio because I was tired of bites and risk of West Nile. I also dislike using nasty chemicals that eradicate all life from my yard. I sprayed my yard (10K sqft) with Mosquito Barrier two weeks ago, and have not seen a single mosquito since. I'm sold!

Mosquito Barrier is a very strong liquid garlic made from very potent garlic cloves. The garlic used in Mosquito Barrier is a very powerful variety which is much more potent than the garlic found in grocery stores (in fact, our lab people here refer to it as super garlic). Spraying garlic to keep insects away is not something new, farmers and master gardeners have been doing it for many generations.Since mosquitoes are soft-bodied insects the garlic juice can be very toxic to them in increased concentrations. The juice does not harm humans or pets or plants, but to mosquitoes it can be deadly. The odor of it chases them out of the area and they stay away - for as long as they can detect the odor. While the odor of sprayed garlic juice becomes undetectable to humans within minutes, the mosquitoes will still detect it. Mosquitoes have extremely sensitive odor sensing antennae - as high as 10,000 times better than humans. They can detect the garlic extract for much longer periods of time and will stay away from the sprayed area for up to a month and more. If the mosquitoes arent in your yard, they cant get into your house.Additionally, Mosquito Barrier, when mixed with soybean oil (available at your local grocery store) plus the water, coats any standing water in the area with a very thin film of natural oil, including some garlic oil which is present in the garlic juice. This oil suffocates the mosquito larvae which are developing in any standing water. Mosquito Barrier, unlike harmful chemicals, doesnt kill bees or butterflies and is completely safe for children, fish, birds, dogs, cats and other pets.Generally, four applications are enough for the entire mosquito and tick season. Even in the heaviest of infestations the gallon size is almost always enough for the entire year for most homes - including areas where the mosquito is the state bird.

(More customer reviews)We purchased this for a hike that we were doing this year, and previously at this same area we had a serious problem with Ticks. This year we didn't even see any ticks so I can't say if this product would have helped in that area. But, we did see a lot of mosquitoes, and of the 5 of us that went there was a total of 1 bite, for both days we were in the woods.
The spray doesn't seem to repel the mosquitoes, since we saw a lot of them, and had them buzzing around us. I am not sure of its killing power since I didn't see any dead mosquitoes on my clothes. But I didn't see any live mosquitoes on my clothes either.
It was kind of a hassle treating the clothes prior to the trip, so I would only recommend this product if you knew you were going to a bug infested location for a few days. Otherwise use a more convenient bug spray.

Consequently, we have LOTS of mosquitos, and it is a potential problem because we have a great patio and spend lots of time there. I say potential problem because of the effectiveness of ouir Sawyers Family Mosquito Repellent products in keeping mosquitos away from us. I have also used it hunting and fishing and it is just as effective on gnats, flies and other flying insects.

(More customer reviews)I pretreated all the clothing I took with me to Haiti with this spray and had no problems with bugs the whole time. I would highly recommend this product to anyone going to areas where malaria would be an issue as well as highly bug inhabited places in the US. I wouldn't use this everyday, but for special occasions - it's a must have. Just make sure you wear gloves when applying and apply exactly as instructed.

(More customer reviews)PROS This worked great in Belize. We spent three nights in the Jungle without a single mosquito or bug bite of any kind. During this time we went on hikes thru the jungle and were in and on rivers as well as caves. The mosquitos were swarming around the other hikers. Several hikers' legs were covered in bites and swelled by the end of the trails. The only bites we got were on the plane ride home because we didn't have any bug spray on. Who knew there'd be mosquitos on the plane too. We also used SAWYER PREMIUM CLOTHING INSECT REPELLENT on our clothes which helped with any bugs that would land directly on your clothes or hat like ticks--kills them dead. awesome.
CONS The 100 deet does feel hot on your skin at first but that passes. I don't recommend it on your face (it'll make your lips numb--that can't be healthy:) Also don't apply it near woodwork or set the bottle on wood work because it takes the finish off the wood. Deet can be hazardous to your health especially prolonged exposure and on children.
But for a short period of time in extreme conditions to avoid more deadly parasites I think it was well worth it!! Malaria, Dengue fever, Filariasis, leishmaniasis, onchocerciasis (River blindness), and American trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) are all diseases carried by insects that also occur in Central America. Myiasis (botfly) is endemic in Central America and thats the last thing I wanted to bring home with me on vacation if I could help it. Thanks Sawyer.
Belize was beautiful and the most amazing vacation. The 100 Deet took the fear of disease off my mind.
